How We Protect PET Food Packaging During Hot-Weather Sea Transportation

PET packaging is lightweight, clear and practical for many food applications. But there is one detail that should not be overlooked when shipping PET jars and containers over long distances: heat during transportation.

This is especially important during summer.

A shipping container may spend weeks in transit and can also remain outdoors at ports or terminals. Under prolonged high-temperature conditions, standard PET packaging can become more vulnerable to deformation, particularly when cartons are stacked under load.

This is something we learned from experience.

A Problem We Encountered Years Ago

In an earlier shipment, some PET containers arrived with deformation after being exposed to high temperatures during transportation.

The products had passed our normal inspection before shipment, so we looked beyond production and packaging quality to understand what had happened.

The issue was eventually linked to the high-temperature environment during transportation.

That experience changed the way we prepare PET packaging for summer shipments.

Instead of treating transportation as something that happens after production, we began treating it as part of the packaging quality process itself.

Our Solution for LCL Shipments

For LCL shipments, customers may choose palletized or non-palletized loading depending on the order and shipping arrangement.

When pallets are required, the cartons are stacked securely and wrapped with stretch film to improve stability during handling and transportation.

During hot-weather periods, we can add an external thermal insulation layer around the palletized cargo to provide additional protection against prolonged heat exposure.

The purpose is simple: reduce the direct impact of the hot transportation environment on the PET containers inside.

It is a small additional step, but for a long international journey, small details can matter.

Additional Protection for Full Container Loads

For FCL shipments, we take the same idea one step further.

Before loading the cartons, thermal insulation material can be installed inside the shipping container, creating an additional protective barrier between the cargo and the heated container walls.

The cartons are then loaded inside the protected container.

This approach is particularly useful during the hotter months or for shipments travelling through regions where high temperatures during transit are expected.

We Do This Before the Customer Has to Ask

One detail that matters to us is that this is not treated as an optional service that we try to sell after an order is confirmed.

When the season and shipping conditions indicate that additional heat protection is appropriate, we arrange it as part of our shipment preparation.

We do not charge our customers an additional fee for these seasonal heat-protection measures.

For us, preventing a transportation problem is much better than discussing responsibility after the goods have already travelled thousands of kilometres.

Packaging Quality Does Not End at the Factory Door

When evaluating a food packaging supplier, dimensions, weight, transparency, sealing performance and price are all important.

But there is another question worth asking:

How will the packaging be protected until it actually reaches your factory?

A PET jar can leave the production line in perfect condition. It still needs to survive warehousing, loading, container transportation, port handling and unloading before reaching the customer.
